I love love LOVE this idea! So much so that I had to repost it.

A bit about the exhibit:

“Comprising two vending machines strategically placed around the Melbourne CBD, Insert Coin Here explores hierarchies of value and mechanised systems of exchange.

The Insert Coin Here vending machines contain limited edition ‘fashion objects’ which are randomly dispensed when a member of the public inserts a $2 coin. The artworks contained in the machines have been produced by over 60 Melbourne-based artists, designers and craft practitioners.”

How cool would it be if we could get something like this going in the U S of A! Does it already exist and I just don’t know about it yet? I wonder….

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the exhibit:

Mountain brooches by Dawn Tan

Ribbon award brooches by Amy Borrell

Pocket Garden by Kyoko Imazu. Also available on etsy.

Australia is looking better and better to me. :)

  2. Duh. Let’s go.

I know this exhibit is awesome because it makes me uncomfortable. One-of-a-kind artwork from a vending machine? Pay-per-view art exhibits that you get to not only touch, but own??? It’s enough to make Walter Benjamin’s head spin in his grave (http://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/philosophy/works/ge/benjamin.htm).
